Yoga is much more than movement. Long before yoga became associated with flexibility or fitness, it was a complete system for understanding the body, the breath, the mind, and consciousness. The postures were never the destination—they were the preparation. Our 50-Hour Classical Haṭha Yoga Foundation is designed for anyone who wants to move beyond simply practising yoga and begin understanding it. Whether you’re completely new to yoga, a dedicated practitioner, or a yoga teacher looking to strengthen your foundation, this course offers a structured introduction to the principles that have guided yoga for thousands of years. At Yogshala, we don’t simply teach you what to practise—we teach you why. ⸻ What You’ll Learn Master the Complete Surya Namaskāra Surya Namaskāra (Sun Salutation) is one of yoga’s most widely practised sequences, yet very few practitioners understand its traditional significance. In this course you’ll learn: * The complete Surya Namaskāra sequence * Proper alignment and breathing * The 12 Surya Mantras * The meaning behind each mantra * The symbolism of the Sun in the yogic tradition * How to practise Surya Namaskāra as a meditative discipline rather than simply a physical exercise ⸻ Classical Haṭha Yoga Develop a strong foundation in traditional Haṭha Yoga through carefully guided practice. You’ll explore: * Foundational yoga postures * Alignment and safe movement * Traditional sequencing * Building a sustainable personal practice * The purpose behind every posture Rather than memorizing shapes, you’ll begin to understand how the physical practice prepares the body for deeper yogic disciplines. ⸻ Prāṇāyāma (Breathwork) Discover why the breath is considered one of the most powerful tools in yoga. Learn foundational breathing techniques including: * Nāḍī Śodhana * Bhrāmarī * Ujjāyī * Kapālabhāti * Yogic breathing * Breath awareness and regulation You’ll understand not only how to practise them, but when, why, and their traditional purpose. ⸻ Meditation (Dhyāna) Meditation is one of the central pillars of yoga. Throughout the course you’ll learn: * Breath meditation * Concentration (Dhāraṇā) * Trāṭaka * Traditional meditation techniques * Building a consistent personal practice ⸻ Foundations of the Chakra System The chakra system is often misunderstood or oversimplified. This course introduces the traditional foundations of the seven chakras, their symbolism, qualities, and their relationship with the body, breath, mind, and awareness. You’ll gain a clear understanding of the basic chakra mechanism and how yogic practices have traditionally been used to cultivate balance and self-awareness. ⸻ Philosophy & History of Yoga Understanding yoga begins with understanding where it comes from. Topics include: * The meaning of Yoga * History and evolution of Yoga * Classical Haṭha Yoga * Introduction to Raja Yoga * The Eight Limbs of Yoga * Yamas & Niyamas * Basic Sanskrit terminology * Yoga as a way of life These teachings are presented in a practical and accessible way, helping you connect ancient wisdom with modern life. ⸻ Who Is This Course For? This course is ideal for: * Beginners seeking a genuine introduction to yoga * Regular practitioners wanting to deepen their understanding * Future yoga teachers preparing for a 200-hour training * Certified teachers wishing to revisit the foundations * Anyone interested in studying yoga beyond the physical practice No previous yoga experience is required. ⸻ Course Details Schedule: Weekends (Sat & Sun), 12:00 PM–5:00 PM (includes 1-hour break 2:00–3:00 PM). At Yogshala, we honour the classical traditions of Haṭha Yoga and Raja Yoga, teaching yoga as a complete discipline rather than a fitness trend. Every posture, breath, meditation, and philosophical discussion is connected to the larger purpose of the practice. This course is designed not only to improve how you practise yoga, but to transform how you understand it. “Atha Yogānuśāsanam” — Now begins the discipline of Yoga. (Yoga Sūtras 1.1) If you’re ready to begin your journey beyond the physical practice, we’d be honoured to welcome you to Yogshala.
